Durban - An elderly KwaZulu-Natal couple and owners of a popular hotel in Wartburger were gunned down on Wednesday night, police said on Thursday.
Siggi Schaedle, 68, and his wife Ingrid, 63, were working at their Wartburger Hof Hotel, 40 kilometres away from Pietermaritzburg, when an armed man entered the premises after 22:00.
"The chef at the hotel heard screaming in the reception area and proceeded there," police spokesperson Superintendent Henry Budhram said.
"He saw a well-built man armed with a gun walking towards Ingrid who was behind the reception counter," said Budhram.
The gunman shot the woman before proceeding to the lounge area.
Several more gunshots were heard by staffers, before the gunman fled.
The chef found the bodies.
A bullet had struck Ingrid in her left shoulder while her husband sustained multiple gunshot wounds to his upper chest.
Both were declared dead at the scene.
Budhram said no belongings were taken and no arrests had been made.
