Pretoria - A man shot while trying to fight off robbers ransacking his Pretoria home has died of his injuries in hospital, police said.

Inspector Paul Ramaloko said the man, whose details were not immediately available, died in the Pretoria Academic hospital on Friday where he was being treated for chest wounds.

The man, his wife and their children were overpowered in their Moreleta Park home by four robbers on Thursday night.

The attackers tied him up and took his wife through the home forcing her to point out valuables.

The robbers took several items but the man then got involved in a struggle with one of them and was shot in the chest, before his attackers fled.

He was taken to the Pretoria Academic hospital where he died at about 10:00 on Friday.

Ramaloko said police had opened a murder docket and were also investigating armed robbery.
