Johannesburg - A man hid in a deep freezer while his accomplice was shot and injured when he tried to assault a policeman after a failed robbery in Mthatha, Eastern Cape police said on Sunday.

Spokesperson Mike Fatyela said the two men held a security guard at knife point with the intention of breaking into the premises he was guarding on Saturday night. An alarm went off and police went to investigate.

One of the them tried to assault a policeman and he was shot in the leg.

The other man hid in a deep freezer, but got out because it was too cold and was arrested.

He is due to appear in the Mthatha Magistrate's Court on Monday and his accomplice, who is in hospital under police guard, will appear once he is discharged.

A case of attempted robbery and assault has been opened.
