US student raped on KZN campus
14/11/2007 14:43 - (SA)
Durban - An exchange student from the United States was raped at the University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN), police said on Wednesday.
Police spokesperson Inspector Michael Read said the incident took place at the university's Howard College campus residences in the early hours of Monday morning.
He said details were sketchy and police were investigating the case.
Meanwhile Durban's afternoon Daily News newspaper on Wednesday quoted the university's investigations manager Peter Korte as saying that he believed the rapist was "an insider".
Korte told the newspaper that the student, who lives at the residence, did not see her attacker as she was not wearing her glasses.
She was taken to King Edward VIII Hospital where she was treated, and anti-retrovirals administered.
The report said the student had been moved "to a safe house" where she was receiving counselling.
Her friend and fellow exchange student, Abdul Ghani, was quoted as saying: "She's been here since January and loved this place."
Another exchange student - Nimit Mehta from New York - told the Daily News that he had had his belongings stolen at the residences and was also mugged at knife point while walking to campus. His friends have also been mugged during their stay.
"Despite all this, I've enjoyed my stay and the people are amazing. More often than not foreigners say South Africa is such a great country except for the crime.
"I can fend for myself, but I certainly will not be encouraging any of my friends to come here, especially the girls."
