Bloemfontein - Security guards foiled a cash heist in Welkom on Thursday by shooting at the suspected robbers' car, police said.

Spokesperson Puleng Motsoeneng said the security guards were collecting cash at a wholesaler in Welkom when the incident happened at about 10:45 on Thursday.

"Shots were fired by the (security) personnel and that foiled the robbery. As a result the (suspected robber's) Corolla's back windscreen was damaged."

Motsoeneng said the incident was reported to police.

The car was found abandoned at the Welkom Preparatory School shortly afterwards.

"The vehicle was found to have been stolen in Port Elizabeth," said Motsoeneng.
