Durban - A security guard was critically wounded during a cash-in-transit heist in Durban's Isipingo suburb on Monday, police said.
Superintendent Vincent Mdunge said two security guards were collecting cash from a panel beating shop when they were confronted by three armed men armed with AK47 assault rifles.
The robbers opened fire on the two security guards wounding one in the chest, leg and arm.
Mdunge said the guard was rushed to hospital and the armed robbers fled with one money box. He said it was not immediately known how much money was taken.
Netcare 911 spokesperson Chris Botha said the security guard was in a serious condition in Entabeni Hospital, having sustained five gunshots.
In another heist on Monday in the KwaZulu-Natal midlands town of Howick a group of five armed robbers disabled a cash transit vehicle by ramming it with a Mercedes Benz sedan.
Superintendent Henry Budhram said the security officers were disarmed and the money boxes were taken.
He said the guards were not injured and the amount of money taken was not immediately known.
