Durban - The N3 highway between Bergville and the Tugela River in KwaZulu-Natal was closed on Tuesday after a tanker - carrying oil --overturned.

KwaZulu-Natal Transport spokesperson Zinhle Mngomezulu said the tanker overturned at 03:00 on the south bound carriageway.

She said around 15 000 litres of oil had been spilt on the highway.

"The N3 has been closed and we have just opened the fast lane to allow traffic to go through - due to the amount of oil spilt, it will take an entire day to clean up, so the highway will be closed for the rest of the day and we urge motorists to use alternate routes," she said.

The truck driver was uninjured.
