Johannesburg - A police officer was killed and another injured during an armed robbery and hijacking in Greytown, Kwazulu-Natal police said on Wednesday.
Police spokesperson Joey Jeevan said six men - armed with high calibre rifles and handguns - entered a supermarket in Voortrekker Street on Wednesday morning.
They held the staff up at gunpoint and forced the manager to open the safe, thereafter fleeing onto the street with a substantial amount of cash.
Two police officers on a routine street patrol in a police vehicle were shot at by the fleeing men.
Inspector Ageet Mewa, 49, was killed by a gunshot wound to the head.
Inspector Navin Maharaj, 43, sustained a gunshot wound to the neck.
Hijacked two vehicles
He was airlifted to St Anne's hospital in a critical condition.
After shooting at the police, the armed robbers fled by hijacking two vehicles belonging to customers arriving at the store.
"Both the hijacked vehicles were found overturned and abandoned, about five kilometres from the scene.
"The men had fled into the nearby sugarcane plantation. Several 9mm and AK47 expended cartridges were found at the scene."
After an extensive police search, five men were arrested in possession of various firearms.
Police believe more men were likely to have been keeping guard outside the store and are expecting further arrests.
The arrested men would appear in the Greytown Magistrate' Court, police said.
