03/12/2007 10:27 - (SA)
Johannesburg - A violent storm, possibly a tornado, ripped roofing off three buildings at Cofimvaba Hospital in the Eastern Cape in the early hours of Monday morning, the provincial health department said.
Spokesperson Sizwe Kupelo said no one was injured.
He said the storm, with strong winds and heavy rain, hit the hospital soon after midnight, tearing asbestos roofing off the male, female and paediatric wards.
About 70 patients from those wards would be transferred to other hospitals by emergency services staff who were on the scene.
The department was sending a team from its hospital revitalisation project to assess the damage. The wards would be repaired as soon as possible.
Hospital staff were mopping up water in wards where flooding had occurred.
Other reports indicated that two people were injured when storms ripped through parts of the Eastern Cape on Sunday night.
Mthatha was also without electricity.
