Cape Town - A security guard was shot dead and two others were seriously wounded an attempted cash heist in Parow on Monday, Cape Town police said.
At 12:30, eight armed men rammed their two vehicles into a Fidelity Guard cash van, said Constable Siphokazi Mawisa.
The van was forced to a standstill in Duiker Street, Parow Valley. The robbers fired several shots at the van, killing a guard and wounding two others.
The robbers left their vehicles at the scene and fled empty handed in a black Ford Ranger bakkie. The two injured guards were taken to hospital, Mawisa said.
Police later apprehended eight men who tried to escape on foot after abandoning their getaway car at the Florida Park Sports Grounds.
An AK47 rifle, an R5 rifle, a 9mm pistol and a .38-special revolver were confiscated. Both vehicles used to ram the van were reported to have been stolen early last month.
The men are due to appear in the Parow Magistrate's Court on Wednesday on charges of murder, attempted murder and attempted armed robbery.
