Jhb Hospital 'unprofessional'
06/12/2007 07:27 - (SA)
Johannesburg - Bottles of saline solution in plastic bags are being used as traction for patients with broken bones at Johannesburg Hospital, the Democratic Alliance (DA) claimed on Wednesday.
"I saw this myself after I received a complaint from a relative of a patient there," an "astonished" DA Gauteng health spokesperson Jack Bloom said.
"Nurses told me that this was the best they could do without conventional weights," Bloom said.
The hospital could not immediately be reached for comment.
"It actually works quite well, but I would not expect this of a flagship hospital," said Bloom.
"It just seems so unprofessional, but not quite as bad as the three babies in a box at the Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital.
"Are we really so short of budget that we can't afford proper weights instead of bottles in ugly shopping bags?" he asked.
