67kg cocaine bust at airport
07/12/2007 13:03 - (SA)
Johannesburg - Cocaine worth an estimated R30m on the street was found hidden in a consignment of musical instruments at the OR Tambo International Airport on Friday, said SA Revenue Services (Sars).
The 67kg haul came in on a flight from Sao Paulo, Brazil, said Sars spokesperson Adrian Lackay.
Discovered shortly after 08:00, the bust is considered by Sars to be one of the biggest this year.
In January, 20kg of cocaine was confiscated at the airport, with another 23kg confiscated later in the year.
Customs officials have made 86 cocaine seizures at various border posts across South Africa in the past financial year.
They see these as significant breakthroughs in the supply chain.
"Sars has been working closely with the South African Police Service and other law enforcement agencies in the fight against the illicit trade in drugs and other illegal goods," Lackay said.
Cocaine is found in cocoa leaves commonly harvested in South America and is considered a strong stimulant which induces a sense of exhilaration.
