Durban - One security guard was killed and another was critically injured during a cash-in-transit heist in Durban's Umlazi area on Monday morning, police said.
Police spokesperson Superintendent Vincent Mdunge said the two security guards from Coin Security were collecting cash from a store at the MegaCity shopping mall in Umlazi, when they were attacked by two armed men wielding AK47 assault rifles.
Mdunge said that one of the security guards was exiting the store when the two men began shooting at him. Seeing that he was under fire, his colleague opened fire and a gun fight ensued.
The two robbers managed to escape with the money boxes containing an undisclosed amount of money.
Netcare 911 spokesperson Chris Botha said one guard was dead and the other had been rushed to hospital in a critical condition, having sustained a gunshot wound to the head.
Botha said paramedics had not been able to find a gunshot wound on the dead guard.
"I can't say what caused his death. There doesn't seem to be a gunshot wound."
