  • Durban - A 40-year-old man, who allegedly abducted and killed a five-year-old boy he believed was a tokoloshe, was remanded in custody at the Umlazi Regional Court on Monday.

Muzikayise Simon Mbeje who allegedly abducted Sanele Mncwabe from his home in Pinetown on September 30 before taking him to Umlazi was ordered by the court to reappear on December 20 for the state prosecutor to "requisition the (police) docket".

Mbeje himself did not appear as he had not been brought to the court from Westville Prison.

He told police he believed that Sanele was "an animal" and that he was defending himself when he attacked the boy.

The severely injured Sanele died at Prince Mshiyeni Memorial Hospital on October 1. He had sustained several stab wounds to the head, back and one leg. Part of his tongue and an ear were also cut.

Initially police believed that the boy was Mbeje's son, but Sanele's mother later claimed that her son had been abducted.

In October Mbeje, who has pleaded not guilty to murder, was granted bail of R2 500, but he was unable to pay it.
