11/12/2007 16:43 - (SA)
Pretoria - National Police Commissioner Jackie Selebi said on Tuesday intelligence indicated that a gang of robbers planning a cash heist near Bela-Bela, had planned to set the cash van alight.
Eleven would-be robbers were killed and another wounded when a crack police team opened fire on them after being tipped off about the heist.
No-one else was hurt in the proactive operation involving members of the special task force ? supported by detectives from Gauteng and
Limpopo - Selebi said.
Three vehicles and over a dozen firearms were recovered at the scene.
"This is yet again a clear indication that the SAPS has the intelligence and capacity to deal with these large gangs of armed thugs and will not hesitate to fight fire with fire in order to protect the people of South Africa and their property.
"My sincere thanks to the brave policemen involved in thwarting this heinous and ruthless crime."
