257km/h DJ must 'rot in jail'

Johannesburg - The man who flew along the N1 at 257km/h in his Audi TT at the weekend is a "total idiot" and should be jailed for life.

So says Grant McCleery, owner of Driving Dynamics, an advanced driving school in Johannesburg.

He was commenting on Tuesday about SABC1 presenter and radio show host Sbusiso Leope, (aka DJ S'bu).

Leope apparently was clocked on Sunday night in his silver TT doing 257km/h travelling north on the N1, south of Johannesburg.

It was the highest speed yet recorded by the metro police.

McCleery said: "I've been racing all my life, but I always keep to the speed limit.

"People have no idea what can happen if you travel at such a high speed - especially if you take into account that South Africa has some of the most dangerous roads in the world."

He illustrated exactly how fast Leope was going.

    Would take 800m to stop

"The reaction time of an average person is one second. That means it takes one second for someone to respond when they see something in front of them.

"A person travelling at 120km/h would cover 34m in that time. If they were to hit the brakes immediately, it would take about 120m to come to a complete stop.

"If the person travelled at 257km/h, they would cover 72m in their reaction time and only come to a dead stop about 800m down the line."

That's the length of eight rugby fields.

Leope's appearance in Johannesburg Magistrate's Court took place under a veil of secrecy and he slipped out of a rear entrance under police guard.

The police released no further information.
