Johannesburg - A 65-year-old grandmother has been murdered in front of her 11-year-old grandson at Good Hope Village in Dutywa in the Eastern Cape, police said on Sunday.

"The woman was asleep with her grandson [on Saturday] when a male suspect broke the window entering through the window... he went straight to her and shot her in front of the boy," said Captain Lingisile Magama.

The woman died on the scene after being shot twice, once in the arm and once in the face.

The man left without harming the boy.

"The boy wrapped himself in blankets and hid until the morning after which he called the neighbours who reported to the police," said Magama.

Police are investigating a case of murder and social services will send a counsellor to the boy on Tuesday.
