Port Elizabeth - Eight people were murdered in Port Elizabeth on Saturday and Sunday, said Eastern Cape police.
Captain Andre Beetge said two men, both aged 25, and a 23-year-old man were stabbed to death in separate incidents in Motherwell.
A 17-year-old youth had been arrested for stabbing one of the 25-year-olds during an argument while out drinking, he said.
In Kwazakele, a man was stabbed to death and another beaten to death on Sunday.
The circumstances and motives for these murders were not known, nor was it known what was behind the stabbing deaths of another two men in Zwide.
Beetge said a 12-year-old boy was found beaten to death in a room used by destitute children in New Brighton.
Cause for concern
"The sudden flood of lethal violence is a huge concern to the South African Police Service," he said.
Beetge said another three people were found dead in other incidents.
He said a man, 55, was found dead in a transport office at the Dora Nginza Hospital. It was thought he was using the office as a temporary shelter.
Beetge said a 50-year-old destitute man was found dead in Parson's Hill. His body was hanging from a fence he was thought to have tried to climb while drunk.
An unknown man, in his 20s, was found dead in a puddle in Kwazakele, while 29-year-old Khaya Matewu died in a shack fire in Motherwell.
