Pretoria - A man was shot and killed and his wife and daughter were critically wounded when two robbers broke into their home in Menlopark, Pretoria, police said on Monday.

Spokesperson Captain Paul Ramoloko said the robbers broke into the house at about 23:00 on Sunday while the family was out.

"The robbers were caught off-guard when the family of three returned home," said Ramoloko.

He said the robbers fired shots at them to "clear their way", killing the man and critically wounding the mother and daughter.

They took cellphones before running away.

No arrests were made yet.

"The details were still sketchy, but investigations were continuing," said Ramoloko.

Another robbery

In another incident on Sunday, a robber was shot and wounded in a shootout with police during a house robbery in Erasmia where four men held a family at gunpoint.

A neighbour alerted the police.

A shootout between the police and the robbers left a 20-year-old robber wounded, while his accomplices escaped on foot and empty handed, said Ramoloko.

The wounded man was taken to hospital under heavy police guard.

Two firearms were confiscated, said Ramoloko.
