Johannesburg - A man was killed when his car crashed into a bridge in Johannesburg on Tuesday, paramedics said.

ER24 spokesperson Werner Vermaak said the accident happened on the N1 Freeway under the William Nicol Drive bridge.

"A white Mercedes (Benz) was split in two by the bridge. A young man was found trapped in the vehicle. He sustained fatal injuries and he was declared dead on the scene."

The Johannesburg fire department used rescue and hydraulic equipment to cut the body out of the vehicle.

"The exact cause of the accident is not known and will be investigated by the Johannesburg Metro Police Department," said Vermaak.
