Modise fraud case postponed
21/12/2007 18:03 - (SA)
Kimberley - The bail hearing of businessman Charles Modise in the Kimberley Magistrate's Court has been postponed to next year, the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) said on Friday.
"The part-heard bail application was postponed to January 17," said NPA spokesperson Tlali Tlali.
"The matter was postponed for him to get legal representation after his attorney of record had withdrawn."
Tlali said the Scorpions were ready to proceed with the bail application on Thursday, but Modise's attorney and advocate stayed away.
The court then postponed the matter to Friday.
"Sello Leballo (Modise's attorney) withdrew then," said Tlali. Tender fraud
Modise was arrested in Gauteng by the Scorpions, during an investigation into alleged tender fraud of R20m in the Northern Cape.
His company, Sedibeng Construction, was apparently involved in irregularities in order to obtain tenders from the Northern Cape department of public works, roads and transport.
Modise, also suspected of being an illegal Malawian immigrant, made headlines after he laid a complaint with the police against the SA Communist Party, relating to a R500 000 donation he said he made to the SACP in 2002.
He alleged the money had been given to Congress of SA Trade Unions president Willie Madisha, who said he delivered the money to SACP general secretary Blade Nzimande in 2002.
Nzimande has denied receiving the money.
