Durban - A motorist died and six people were injured in a street race in Chatsworth on Friday night, said rescue workers and police.

Two friends were racing in opposite directions on the Higginson Highway at 21:00, said ER24 and Bayview police.

Rescue workers arrived at the scene to find both cars damaged, but a distance from each other.

It was not known whether the vehicles collided with each other or if a third vehicle was involved.

The driver of one of the cars, in his late-20s, died in the crash. Six passengers in both vehicles were seriously injured.

In a second incident a short while later on the M4, a man in his mid-20s died, said ER24 spokesperson Derrick Banks.

Details of the accident were not clear, he said.
