Durban - Four people - believed to be work colleagues - died in KwaZulu-Natal on Monday morning after their car crashed into a concrete barrier on a busy freeway, paramedics said.

Netcare 911 spokesperson Chris Botha said the silver Polo Playa had been travelling on the M4, south bound freeway when it lost control at 06:45.

"A fifth person who had been in the car was taken to Addington Hospital in a serious condition," said Botha.

Umbilo police spokesperson Captain John Lazarus said the cause of the accident was unknown.

Traffic was backed up to the city centre and all lanes of the freeway were closed, said Lazarus.
