Durban - Five people have died in a horror crash in KwaZulu-Natal.
Netcare 911 spokesperson Chris Botha says a man driving an Audi A3 into Chatsworth had lost control of his car and hit an island before colliding head-on against a bakkie, killing its four occupants.
Christmas presents lay scattered over the road.
Botha says the impact was such that the car's engine lay about 50m from the crash scene. The car, which had burst into flames, was about 20m away from where the accident had happened.
According to a witness who didn't want to be named, the
driver of the car had been street-racing when the accident happened at about 15:00.
Botha said in addition to the driver, there had been two women and a "beautiful little six-year-old girl" in the bakkie.
He said some of the paramedics attending the scene had broken down and cried. He said they would all receive counselling.
"It is a season to be jolly and here we are, cutting people out of mangled wrecks.
"It is really very sad," said Botha.
