KZN guards robbed of guns
27/12/2007 18:45  - (SA)

  • Cash boxes robbed at mall
  • Durban - Two Fidelity guards - who had taken cash to an ATM machine - were robbed of their firearms at a KwaZulu-Natal shopping centre on Thursday, police said.

Superintendent Muzi Mngmoezulu said two armed men held up the guards at the Glebe shopping centre in Umlazi at 08:35.

It is alleged that the guards had already handed over the money to the custodian of the ATM at ABSA bank - who then took the cash into an ATM room.

The guards were leaving when they were held up.

"The men took the guards' firearms but left without the cash," said Mngomezulu.

A member from Durban's Organised Crime Unit said the robbers realised that the money had been handed over to the custodian and then began knocking on the door of the ATM room.

"The manager refused to allow them in ... and then they ran off without any cash," said the officer, who did not want to be named.

Mngomezulu said no injuries were reported and no arrests had been made.
