Johannesburg - The Mpumalanga policeman who shot and killed his girlfriend on Christmas day has turned himself in, police said on Thursday.

Spokesperson Abie Khoabane said the man handed himself over at the Bethal police station at 13:00 on Thursday afternoon.

"After questioning him, he said he tried to shoot himself after he shot his girlfriend - and not his girlfriend's sister."

The couple were at a Christmas party in Bethal on Tuesday when they allegedly argued and left the party.

"On their way home, it is alleged the policeman fought with his girlfriend because he believed she was cheating on him.

"They stopped at the Bethal police station where the fight continued."

The policeman then shot his girlfriend once in the back and she died at the scene, police said.

"As he was driving away from the police station, he collided head on with a police vehicle. No one was injured and the policeman then fled," said Khoabane.

Police are now investigating a case of murder.

The policeman is expected to appear in the Bethal Magistrate's Court soon.
