Pretoria - Despite a lazy streak which makes him want to procrastinate, Bertus Jordaan, 18, from Gauteng got 10 distinctions, the most in this province.
His brother Jaco got 11 distinctions last year.
Bertus attended the Roodepoort High School. His subjects were Afrikaans, English, maths, additional maths, natural sciences and physics, biology, business economics, economy, accountancy and computer studies, all on higher grade.
Bertus said his parents knew about his lazy streak and that he left everything until the last moment.
He added that he started working hard early this year, against his nature.
Sacrifices
"One must make sacrifices if you want to do something well."
Bertus said he had received more attention - spoiling and encouragement - at home since his brother started studying at the University of Pretoria this year. "It must have balanced out," he said.
Bertus was also deputy head boy, one of three student representatives on the body corporate and the editor of Pront-uit, the school's newspaper. He was also a choir member and took part in public speaking competitions.
As a member of the student council he was also involved in writing scripts for a school concert.
He does not play sport, but enjoys watching the games.
His father Barend was involved in the logistics department of Transnet, and his mother Petro is a theatre sister at a day clinic.
Bertus has many interests and that was why he chose as many subjects in Grade 10 as possible.
He wants to study B.Sc (Physics) at Tukkies next year.
He planned the minimum activities for the holidays. He will read his stored copies of Popular Mechanics and prepare for an audition with the university choir, for which he has been provisionally accepted.
