Johannesburg - A 19-year-old woman was raped after she was kidnapped by a man who wanted to make her his wife, said Eastern Cape police on Sunday.
Captain Jackson Manatha said the 25-year-old man was following the old "Xhosa Thwala Custom, where men would kidnap women and declare them their wives without consent and rape them".
He said: "The woman from Chizela Village in Dutywa was kidnapped on Wednesday and raped.
"She was rescued by the man's brother and managed to escape. The man fled from the scene and is still on the run."
According to police, the old "Xhosa Thwala Custom" was stopped long ago. Police were investigating a case of rape.
