Johannesburg - A man was shot and killed by two unidentified men outside his home in Marlothpark in Mpumalanga, police said on Monday.
Superintendent Abie Khoabane said Stephanus Keyser, 42, was shot by two robbers in the leg and chest on Saturday night at about 20:20.
Keyser and his family were returning from a restaurant when the shooting occurred.
"He had allegedly ordered his family to stay in the car while he went into the house to check if everything was in order - the area had in recent weeks been hit by a string of robberies and murders," said Khoabane.
The family went into the house upon his return.
He then went outside again.
"After a short while, the family heard a loud bang but thought it was a cracker.
"They then locked the doors. Two armed men outside the house ordered them to open the doors and give them money," said Khobane.
The armed men eventually fled.
The deceased's 42-year-old wife, Annelize Keyser saw the men removing certain items from the family's car.
The men fled with two cellphones and a firearm.
Khoabane said Keyser was certified dead on arrival at a nearby doctor's surgery.
Police were searching for the two men, believed to be armed and very dangerous.
