Johannesburg - Thirty-five people were arrested over the New Year festive period in Galeshewe in the Northern Cape, police said on Tuesday.
They were held for various offences ranging from assault, robbery, driving under the influence of alcohol, drinking in public and domestic violence, police spokesperson Captain Tony Modise said.
The police and traffic officers began operations at 18:00 on Monday.
Operations continued until 06:00 on Tuesday.
"Members were deployed at all the identified hot spots during the New Year celebrations. The roads were closed as people were singing and dancing while members of the police monitored the situation," Modise said.
One incident of violence between teenagers was reported and two youths were arrested.
However, none of the "usual" incidents such as the stoning of cars, the burning of tyres and illegal drag racing occurred, Modise said.
He added that the police were disappointed at the number of young people abusing alcohol.
During the operations, 300 vehicles and 490 people were stopped and searched.
Galeshewe station commissioner, Director Pieter Myburgh commended the community for the manner in which it celebrated peacefully.
He also thanked police and traffic officers for "a job well done."
