Plane crashes in mountains
01/01/2008 14:35 - (SA)
Johannesburg - A small plane has crashed into the Swartberg mountains near Oudtshoorn in the Eastern Cape, the SABC reported on Tuesday.
All four occupants have been killed, the broadcaster said.
According to a Netcare 911 spokesperson, Mark Stokoe, arriving emergency workers found that the aircraft had crashed into the mountain side during extremely misty conditions.
"Netcare 911 paramedics were being flown in by one of the NSRI Netcare 911 surf rescue helicopters, but they were unable to continue due to misty conditions. The road crew were however able to get to the scene," he said.
Stokoe said that the crew were still on the scene and would be assisting rescue workers in any way possible to help with the recovery process.
It is not clear at this stage if aviation authorities have been able to reach the site yet.
