Johannesburg - A man was beaten to death with a brick by his friend on New Year's Day (Tuesday), East Rand police said on Wednesday.

Captain Alfred Nakana said the man was drinking at his friend's house in Daveyton when the incident occurred.

"It is alleged the friends were drinking and joking with each other.

"One of the men became angry as a result of a joke and hit his 45-year-old friend with a brick."

The man died in hospital and the friend was arrested, he said.

Police said a case of murder was being investigated.

The man was expected to appear in the Benoni Magistrate's Court on Wednesday, Nakana said.
