  • Johannesburg - Six alleged robbers have been arrested at a petrol station near the M1 highway in the south of Johannesburg on Saturday afternoon, police said.

Spokesperson Captain Bheikizizwe Mavundla said the police received information that six men were on their way to rob a restaurant in Edenvale.

"We arrested men, aged between 25 and 40, in a microbus at the BP garage near the Xavier Road off-ramp, filling up petrol. We seized two firearms and ammunition."

Mavundla said one firearm, a revolver, was licensed and belonged to a Pretoria owner and the police were investigating the relationship between the owner and the alleged robbers.

The second firearm, a 9mm pistol, was unlicensed and its serial number had been removed.

The suspects would face charges of possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition when they appeared in the Johannesburg Magistrate's Court on Monday.
