Poverty and crime
Most South Africans believe that poverty is the root cause of escalating crime levels.
Still fighting
Desmond Tutu is showing no signs of slowing down as he turns 77, and is still an advocate for justice.

  • Johannesburg - No arrests had been made after a 47-year-old man was shot in the head and killed in a robbery at his home in Waterkloof Ridge, Pretoria police said on Tuesday.

Captain Lucas Sithole said the robbery occurred on Saturday night where two armed men entered the home and took a laptop, four cell phones, a handbag and R500 in cash.

They then shot the man, Fred Picton-Turberville, in the head and fled the scene. Picton-Turberville, believed to be a British national, died later in hospital.

It was reported Picton-Turberville's wife and four young children watched in horror as an armed robber shot him in the head during the house robbery.

On Sunday, the report said, the house in Waterkloof stood abandoned and neighbours had no idea how the robbers had managed to invade what seemed to be an impregnable fortress.

The walls around the house were more than two metres high. Both these walls and the motorised palisade gate had electric fencing. From the street only the garage was visible and it seemed impossible to enter the premises from a neighbouring property.

Neighbours on both sides of the Picton-Turbervilles reportedly said they had not heard anything at the time and only learned about the tragedy when contacted by the media.
