Johannesburg - Two men were arrested while trying to escape from a police holding cell in Lydenburg on Friday morning, Mpumalanga police said.
Police officers doing their rounds found the two fighting one another, and a blanket hanging from the ceiling of their cell shortly before 02:00, said Superintendent Abie Khoabane.
Khoabane said: "We suspect they were fighting because the blanket was too high and only one could get up with the help of the other one."
A hacksaw was found in their possession. It was not known how they managed to smuggle it inside.
They tried to disarm the officers when they entered the cell, but were overpowered.
The two were a 29-year-old arrested for car theft and a 46-year-old armed robbery suspect.
