Cape Town - Two models from the Netherlands have had a nightmare introduction to Cape Town - they were robbed by two men within hours of arriving at their luxury flat in Camps Bay.
The badly traumatised pair and their three South African flatmates - also models - were attacked by the two men about 02:00 on Saturday in a security complex.
One of the models, who did not want to be named, said he was sleeping in front of the television on the ground floor when the men gained access to the flat through a "closed window".
According to the Dutch model, he had pushed a mattress and a wooden table against the bedroom door, because the key did not fit the lock.
He woke up when the robbers gained access to the room. "When I opened my eyes, two huge men were standing next to my bed. They were very aggressive."
The men grabbed jewellery, a camera and cash from the bedside.
"My girlfriend and I were terrified and we started screaming."
Fled from the flat
By this time, one of the men had attacked one of the South African models and was trying to rip a R4 000 watch from her arm.
The models all fled from the flat and sought refuge at the flat of a Spanish couple, also models.
Police spokesperson Billy Jones said they were investigating a charge of burglary and theft.
An allegation that it had taken police a long time to arrive had been brought to the attention of the management of Camps Bay police station, and would be investigated.
No one had been arrested in connection with the incident and no suspects had been identified, said Jones.
The models from Holland and Spain were still deciding whether or not they should go home.
None of the models wanted to be identified.
Andrea Baptista, the agent for the international models, said overseas models were often ignorant of the crime problem in South Africa.
"They're inclined to leave doors and windows open. They don't realise how dangerous it can be."
