Randburg - If someone stands at your car window and threatens to kill a puppy unless you buy it, you should refuse.

That's the advice of Mandy Cattanach of Randburg's Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA).

"If you buy the dog, you're creating a market. The sellers wouldn't stand next to the road the whole day for nothing," said Cattanach.

According to her, this new practice has become increasingly common since last October, with people from townships where animals regularly give birth in the street, using the new arrivals to persuade motorists to buy kittens and pups at busy crossings.

Cattanach says the "sellers" often dangle the dog by a paw, or its neck, and threaten to strangle them unless the occupants of the car give them up to R200.

"People pay up to R500 because they feel sorry for the animals, but it doesn't help because it (the animal) is just replaced by another," she said.

Since the beginning of January at least six cats and dogs have been confiscated by the SPCA and metro police.

One of the kittens died of dehydration shortly after arriving at the SPCA.

    Charged with animal abuse

Metro police confiscated two pups on Tuesday that were only about two weeks old at the William Nicol off-ramp on the N1 motorway in Johannesburg.

The pups had not yet cut their teeth and should still have been drinking mother's milk. They were covered in fleas, lice and ringworm, and constituted a health hazard.

Metro's Wayne Minnaar said the man was arrested and charged with animal abuse.

They were investigating if he'd previously committed a similar crime.

Most of the bogus sellers didn't have food or water to give the baby animals.

    - Beeld

      "Pay or the Puppy Dies"
    16/01/2008 07:17
The SPCA does have a point. However, I do not agree. Is the SPCA not suppose to be here to protect animals from harm? The Line between starving to death or doing anything to survive is strong in all of us. Logic states that if you have anything to use to your advantage in times of need, you will use it and when it becomes redundant, you will get rid of it. The SPCA should be finding the solution to the real problem-saving animals, not putting them at more risk. - Jeannine Rapp

      Wont take this!
    16/01/2008 07:17
I personally will get out my car and sort the guy out! Ive had it too much when they do this to the animals and the public. He will know how it feels to dangle by his feet!!! - Brendon

      Only solution??
    16/01/2008 07:22
Just flat refuse? That should leave most animal lovers unsure and sleepless for the next couple of nights... Here's another solution: Give us a name & number to contact said person on when we encounter these extortionists to report location, time & description - and a bonus would be to give us the right to beat the living hell out of the extortionist, and deliver the kitten or pup somewhere. So, give me a number, or the extortionist pig gets it!!! - J Cilliers

Pups for sale at William Nicol Offramp
    16/01/2008 07:25
Hi there, as per your article, yesterday morning I came off the offramp from the randburg side, and a man was trying to sell a puppy . A police vehicle went right past the man and did nothing!! - Dean Conde

Ban these wretched hawkers altogether - they are a pest
    16/01/2008 07:38
This is a despicable new trend from hawkers. I am a total dog-lover but have to agree that these poor creatures are probably better off being put out of their misery as the sellers clearly don't respect any form of life. The problem is the endless supply of new animals that aren't looked after and the bleeding heart public that wants to rescue them. We can look away at traffic lights but what does that say about our society that we have to willingly watch an animal endure suffering to stop this? - GP

      Hang these savages
    16/01/2008 07:52
Just like the idiot who walked around Swartruggens shooting innocent people for no reason, these animal abusers should be hung. There is no excuse for savage behavior like this and our country is being overrun with it. Its a telling sign of the downward spiral or morality and humanity. Its time we stop clogging up our legal systems with these barbarians. Get rid of them. SA does not need them. - Ian

Pay up or this dog dies
    16/01/2008 08:21
What is this world comming to? I think this is disgusting and I am really upset about this article. It has made me feel sad and infuriated. I hope that the SPCA are going to do something about this immediately before it gets out of hand. - Debby

only way to deal with these retards...
    16/01/2008 08:54
...is to get out your car and smash them. how can they treat animals like that!!!??? im sorry but arrest for animal cruelty isnt enough, maybe these idiots will think twice before doing it again if a motorist skittles the sellers teeth along william nicol. - roy

Is this a sign of our times ?
    16/01/2008 09:00
I know there are very poor, hungry and desperate people out there but this, this is unnatural and inhumane. Hang 'em high I say. - Ami

Pay Up Or This Dog Dies
    16/01/2008 09:42
How sick can people get? Just when I think I've seen everything, some idiot stunns me with his capability to be cruel! Aren't we supposed to be the rulers of creation? Didn't God put us in the position to take care of His creation? What do these people say when Judgement Day comes and God asked them what they did? - Anne-Marie Reinhardt

Why do we put up with this????
    16/01/2008 09:49
Sick, wish I could hold them by there neck, and strangle them. See how they like it - TB

      SHOCKING

My goodness, no better than a common criminal these street corner sellers. Prosecute them. Lock them up! Get rid of them, i'm tired of them and their stupid antics. - MP3
