Selebi 'suspension' a victory
16/01/2008 07:35 - (SA)
Johannesburg - The "suspension" of National Police Commissioner Jackie Selebi was a victory for the rule of law in South Africa, the SA Students Congress said on Tuesday.
Spokesperson and president of Sasco, David Maimela, said the future of the country rested on the pillar of the rule of law and he accordingly welcomed Selebi's departure from his post.
President Thabo Mbeki announced on Saturday that Selebi, who faces allegations of corruption, fraud, racketeering and defeating the course of justice, was going on extended leave of absence.
"We are proud as students of South Africa to live in a country where nobody is above the law," said Maimela.
Sasco called on all sectors of society to respect the course of the law, and the rights of Selebi and all players involved, with a view to making the criminal justice system work efficiently.
Sasco was satisfied that the rule of law was not only a written principle but also a practice that the government was prepared to uphold and protect, Maimela said.
