Johannesburg - A 59-year-old businessman died in hospital after being shot in the head during a robbery in Cape Town, police said on Friday.
Spokesperson Bernadine Steyn said Phil Harwood was shot on Thursday, in front of his business in Fitzmaures Street in the Epping Industrial area.
Harwood was returning from a nearby bank after withdrawing money when a silver BMW pulled up. Two of the three occupants approached him and assaulted him.
They robbed him of a bag containing an undisclosed amount of money and returned to their vehicle.
He followed them back to the vehicle and tried to open one of the doors. One of the men fired a shot, which hit Harwood in the head. He died later in hospital.
Steyn said the men fled the scene in the BMW, which was later found abandoned in Bofor Crescent, Epping.
A case of murder and armed robbery has been opened.
