Move on metro cops, ID says
20/01/2008 23:07 - (SA)
Johannesburg - The disciplinary process against about 100 Western Cape metro policemen suspended on full pay after they had taken part in protest action, must be resolved, the Independent Democrats said on Sunday.
ID Western Cape Provincial Secretary Rodney Lentit said the matter had to be resolved promptly because of the "acute shortage" of metro police available for law enforcement and to cope with traffic problems during the power cuts.
"While we in the ID do not condone illegal strike action, it is clear that to have over 100 officers suspended on full pay is a situation that cannot continue indefinitely," said Lentit.
Lentit said he had written to Democratic Alliance councillor Belinda Walker to ask her about the current status of the disciplinary process.
In August last year, 95 Cape Town metro police officers were suspended after protesting against a staff "placement process".
They face disciplinary and criminal charges after they drove in a cavalcade to the civic centre, causing morning rush-hour traffic jams on the N2.
At the time, council spokesperson Pieter Cronje said the suspension of the 95 from the metro police force of 700 would not create law-enforcement problems.
