Bloemfontein - Police have warned businesses in the northern Free State to be on the lookout for counterfeit money believed to be in circulation in the gold fields region.
Recently, a 17-year-old driving a vehicle was arrested in Welkom for possession of counterfeit money, Sergeant Malebo Khosana said on Monday.
Police have experienced a rise in crimes involving counterfeit notes in specifically the Matjhabeng Municipal area (Welkom).
"We would like to raise awareness of the business community and the community at large about the counterfeit money as we believe there is a lot of counterfeit money in circulation in the gold fields region."
Khosana said that recently five people were apprehended in Bronville for being in possession of counterfeit money, with a face value of about R600.
He said a week later one of the same men who were "arrested" earlier was caught again in Welkom with four other people for the same offence.
"One of the suspects was a 17-year-old and he was the driver of a vehicle when they were busted by the police in Welkom."
