Johanneburg - A 19-year-old man stabbed his parents and a friend before he was run over by a train in Leeudoringstad near Wolmaranstad on Thursday, North West police said.
Spokesperson Superintendent Louis Jacobs said the man was with two friends (a man and a woman) at 05:00 when an argument broke out.
The male friend fled with the intention of calling the police.
While he was away, the 19-year-old took a knife and stabbed the woman aged about 20, several times in the arms, neck and chest.
He then proceeded to his mother's bedroom and stabbed her several times.
The mother, 44, died on the scene.
Stabbed his father
The man went to his father, 56, who was sleeping in another bedroom and stabbed him.
His father's body was later found in the bed.
After this the man took his mother's car and drove in the direction of Orkney.
He was then involved in an accident. He left the vehicle and began walking.
He walked over a railway line and a train hit him.
Jacobs said at this stage, police could not confirm whether or not the man had committed suicide.
Police still had to obtain a statement from the train driver.
The injured female friend was taken to hospital in a serious but stable condition.
Police have opened a case of murder, attempted murder and an inquest.
