Bystanders shot in cash heist
27/01/2008 09:00 - (SA)
Cape Town - Three people were left injured after cash-in-transit security guards were robbed in a Manenberg mall, Western Cape police said on Saturday.
Spokesperson Inspector Bernadine Steyn said Coin security guards did a cash pick-up at a shop in the Nyanga Junction Mall in Manenberg.
The guards were approached by four armed men.
A 24-year-old guard was shot in the chest and leg and taken to hospital in a critical condition.
Two bystanders, a man and a woman, were wounded at the scene, sustaining injuries to their legs and stomach.
They were in serious but stable condition in hospital, said Steyn.
"The suspects fled the scene with one cash-container, containing an undisclosed amount of money."
A red Opel Kadett used as a getaway car was later found abandoned with the empty cash container inside it in Manenberg.
Police confirmed the car was a stolen vehicle taken from Diep River earlier this month.
The armed men were still at large after fleeing again in a VW Kombi.
A case of attempted murder and armed robbery was opened.
