East London - Two men have been arrested for possession of aluminium street lights worth over R20 000 in East London, police said on Sunday.
Spokespersont Mtai Tana said a member of the dog unit, Pieter Swanepoel, spotted four men near a Honda Ballade at a railway crossing at Quigney - a suburb in East London.
"One was standing next to the driver's door and three men were on the other side of the vehicle. Two doors were open and each of the three had an aluminium street light head in his hand. "On coming close, the policeman found that the back seat was full of more aluminium light heads." Broke loose
The men dropped the lights on the grass and two ran into the bush while a third ran around the side of the police vehicle.
"The police gave chase and caught him and a struggle started.
"Police tried to put him into the back of the police vehicle, but the man broke loose and ran.
"The policeman released his dog who caught the man within a few metres."
The fourth man jumped into the Honda Ballade and sped off; police gave chase and managed to arrest him.
The pair - aged 20 and 26 - were expected to appear in the East London Magistrate' s Court on a charge of theft on Monday.
The other two robbers were still at large, police said.
