Kaapmuiden - When police killed a suspected armed robber, they found that he was the brother of one of their colleagues who was attending the scene.
Police had received a tip-off that a gang had just committed a robbery and were travelling on the road between Kaapmuiden and Barberton on Friday night, Superintendent Abie Khoabane said on Monday.
When Kaapmuiden police, who were operating a roadblock on the N4 near the Nkomazi toll gate, tried to pull over a red Nissan Almera and a red bakkie, the suspects opened fire.
"We shot back and after a long chase, five suspects stopped the Almera and fled on foot into bushes. We found one suspect dead in the car," said Khoabane.
He said the suspect was the brother of a Kaapmuiden constable who was at the scene.
Two handguns, a blue police light and police reflector jackets were found in the car.
The gang allegedly had held up two people who were changing a flat tyre on their car earlier in the evening.
The victims were robbed of their cellphones and R3 000 cash.
