  • Johannesburg - An attempted robbery turned into a shootout between two robbers, a security guard and police on Tuesday, Linden police said.

Inspector Hein van Heerden said police were en route to a crime scene when they spotted two robbers and an ADT security guard in a shootout with one another.

The police got out of their vehicle and shot at the robbers as they tried to flee.

The security guard was shot in the foot. The robbers managed to flee on foot, leaving behind their white Nissan 1400 bakkie.

The security guard was admitted to hospital in a stable condition.

About 25 spent cartridges, fired by police, robbers and the security guard, were found on the scene.

The two handguns used by the robbers have not been recovered.

The panic alarm in the house was triggered by the domestic worker after she saw the two men climbing over the gate.

The robbers did not manage to enter the house and nothing was stolen, said Van Heerden.

Police were still searching for the men and called on anyone who had information on the incident to contact the police.
