Nelspruit - Mpumalanga police commissioner Afrika Khumalo has decided not to hold a press conference to answer allegations that he was involved in international drug smuggling.
The allegations were made by self-confessed drug baron Glen Agliotti in a statement against National Police Commissioner Jackie Selebi.
Khumalo's spokesperson, Superintendent Sibongile Nkosi, said on Thursday that the press conference, which was cancelled last Thursday because Khumalo was sick, had now been called off altogether.
She said the commissioner was no longer willing to comment on the issue.
She declined to respond to questions about the commissioner's last visit to Mozambique, his relationship with Selebi or to the state of his health.
"The allegations and questions that you asked are all based on the Agliotti affidavit, not on a formal investigation. We will therefore reserve comment until, or only when, an investigation has been opened," said Nkosi.
Meanwhile, provincial Democratic Alliance chief whip Clive Hatch says the party has been able to secure a promise that the matter will be discussed by the legislature's portfolio committee for safety and security.
He said committee chairperson Nomsa Mtsweni had said she viewed Agliotti's allegations "in serious light" and agreed to place them on the agenda for the first meeting of the portfolio committee.
He said Mtsweni would also ask the provincial department of safety and security to brief the portfolio committee on the matter.
Spokesperson for the legislature, Ernest Nkuna, confirmed that a meeting was held between Mtsweni and the DA, but could not say when the portfolio committee would hold its first meeting.
