Nelspruit - A policeman will appear in court on Friday on charges of shooting his colleague's wife in the chest during a children's birthday party and then threatening to commit suicide.
The 34-year-old constable had invited his colleague and his colleague's wife to his child's third birthday party in Thekwane South outside Nelspruit on Tuesday night.
His colleague, who works with him at KaNyamazane police station, allegedly gave him his gun for safekeeping, but at the end of the party, the cop allegedly denied any knowledge of the gun.
When the colleague's wife intervened and demanded that her husband's gun be returned, she was shot in the chest.
She's in intensive care at the Nelspruit medi-clinic.
Police had to send a negotiating team to the scene when the cop threatened to commit suicide.
He was arrested and the missing gun was found in a washing bowl, wrapped in a cloth.
The policeman will appear in the Nelspruit Magistrate's Court on charges of attempted murder, theft of the gun and unlawful possession of a firearm.
