Church raid: 16 still in custody
15/02/2008 11:19 - (SA)
Johannesburg - The Legal Resources Centre (LRC) will bring an urgent review in the Johannesburg High Court on Friday, in relation to a refusal to hear or grant the bail applications of immigrants still in custody following the Methodist Church raid.
"We will be asking the court to grant bail in respect of all of the applicants," said Janet Love, LRC director.
She said 16 people were in custody. A magistrate refused to hear the application of nine people, one has started a bail application and six others have been granted bail.
The review application will be heard at 14:00 on Friday.
Gilbert Marcus SC will argue the application, together with four junior counsel who have been appearing for the detainees in the Johannesburg Magistrate's Court.
Over 300 people were arrested and held at the Johannesburg Central Police Station at the end of January, after police stormed into the Central Methodist Church during an anti-crime operation.
Police at the time said the raid on the church and other buildings in the city centre was because of reports that people were being robbed on the streets and that the robbers would then flee into the church.
