Johannesburg - A man died and two were seriously hurt when their car hit a tree near Maraisburg, west of Johannesburg, on Sunday morning, said ER24.

Spokesperson Werner Vermaak said the Hyundai Getz hit the tree next to the N1 near the Maraisburg offramp at 09:20.

Paramedics found the driver lying next to the car. The other two men had to be extricated from the wreckage using the Jaws-of-Life.

"One of the occupants had no life signs and paramedics initiated (cardio pulmonary resuscitation) on the scene in order to regain a pulse," said Vermaak. He was declared dead on the scene.

The other two men were taken to a local hospital with multiple injuries.

The cause of the accident was not immediately known.
